Rural Cellular Association blasts Verizon spectrum claims

Verizon Wireless' planned USD3.6 billion acquisition of Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum from cableco consortium SpectrumCo has come under fire from the Rural Cellular Association (RCA), Fierce Wireless reports. Steve Berry, the president of the RCA, has used his testimony at the hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee to lambast claims that Verizon needs more spectrum to cope with a looming capacity crunch for its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, describing the mooted deal as having an ‘insidious and disastrous effect on competition’. Berry added: ‘This transaction would transfer at least 20MHz of prime, unused, and nearly nationwide spectrum into the hands of a carrier that already holds as much as 44MHz of unused spectrum in many markets.
