Congress grants Enatrel approval to expand fibre-optic network

According to BNAmericas, Nicaragua's Congress has authorised state-owned electricity transmission company Enatrel to partner with private, state or foreign companies to expand its 1,000km national fibre-optic network. The resolution entitles Enatrel to ‘commercially develop the installed capacity of the communications system, its infrastructure, media and equipment’ to create companies that provide ‘all types of telecommunications services’ on a national and international level. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database writes that in August 2010 Enatrel announced its intention to install more than 1,000km of fibre-optic cable across the country, promising improved bandwidth for internet services.
