Statistics Mauritius reports 8.7% growth in mobile in 2011

The number of mobile phone users in Mauritius increased by 8.7% in 2011 to 1,294,100, up from 1,190,900 in 2010, according to data published by Statistics Mauritius. The agency also reported that the total number of internet subscriptions in the country increased by 30% over the same period, from 284,200 to 370,000, taking internet population penetration to 28.7%. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, wireless growth has continued in the first half of 2012, with the total number of mobile subscriptions reaching more than 1.345 million by end-June – a population penetration of 104.4% - led by Cellplus Mobile Communications with 54.4% of the market, Emtel (37.8%) and Mahanagar Telephone Limited (7.8%)
