Sprint earmarks June 2013 for iDEN switch-off

Sprint Nextel has indicated that it will shut down service on its 2G iDEN network as early as 30 June 2013. According to Fierce Wireless, the company will be sending written notices to corporate and government iDEN customers from the beginning of next month, offering them a ‘smooth migration’ to its ‘Direct Connect’ push-to-talk CDMA service. The shutdown of the iDEN network, which Sprint has been discussing since late-2010, forms an integral part of its ‘Network Vision’ upgrade, which centres on the deployment of new, multi-mode base stations across its network footprint.
