ARCT reports 19% growth in mobile base in 2011

Burundi’s national telecoms regulator, the Agence de Regulation et de Controle des Telecom (ARCT), says that the country was home to 1.98 million mobile users at the end of December 2011, up 19% from the 1.67 million reported in 2010 and 1.08 million the year before that. In its latest annual report, the watchdog confirmed that investments in new technologies and services, coupled with aggressive marketing campaigns from all operators, continued to drive growth in 2011. ‘Most operators now offer a 3G service, others are providing SIM cards for USD1 and handsets for USD10.
