ISPs call on government to liberalise broadband sector

According to local newspaper Echorouk, internet service providers (ISPs) in Algeria have asked the government to liberalise the national fibre network and Algeria’s international landing station. The operators say that such a move is necessary in order to bring to an end state-owned Algerie Telecom’s monopoly and the lack of development of online services under the telco. At the end of June 2012, Algeria was home to approximately 870,000 broadband subscribers, more than 99% of which are believed to be controlled by Algerie Telecom.
