SKT reveals new technology allowing simultaneous use of two mobile networks

South Korean mobile network operator SK Telecom (SKT) has unveiled its Heterogeneous Network Integration Solution, which it claims is ‘an innovative technology that enables simultaneous use of different types of networks including 3G, Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Wi-Fi to ensure up to 100Mbps high speed data service.’ The operator claims that the technology is capable of seamlessly integrating two heterogeneous networks – for example 3G and Wi-Fi, or LTE and Wi-Fi – to provide a data service offering downlink rates which are the sum of the two individual network speeds. SKT claims that, in terms of practical applications of the technology, high-quality video streaming service users could reduce video loading time by more than 50% and eliminate buffering during video streams. SKT has said that it expects to apply the technology to enable simultaneous use of 3G and Wi-Fi networks in the second quarter of 2012 with a view to offering a service with a theoretical maximum speed of 60Mbps.
