Movistar shuts down CDMA network

Telefonica subsidiary Movistar Ecuador announced the closure of its CDMA2000 1x mobile network on 31 December 2011, as previously scheduled, in order to focus on its GSM/W-CDMA/HSPA services instead. Existing CDMA handset users were offered a discount on the purchase of a new GSM phone, the Samsung E1086, up until the switch-off date.
