British fixed line incumbent BT has pledged to spend around GBP2.5 billion (USD3.92 billion) on improving next-generation broadband infrastructure in Scotland, the Press Association reports. The telco has unveiled what it claims is its largest ever ‘superfast’ fibre-based broadband project for Scotland, with around 277,000 premises to be covered as part of the work it plans to carry out. It is understood that BT will utilise a mixture of fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology for the scheme, and upgrades in 2012 are expected to cover 34 exchange areas, including Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow
